1991 yamaha starts hard

I have a 1991 yamaha that does not want to start right away, it tries to start but chugges first. It used to backfire mostly in reverse and i was told to unlug the reverse buzzer which worked, are these two things related. I went thru everything carb, adjusted valves, plug, filter, could this be a timing problem. Thanks k

How much compression does it have? If you haven't done a compression test I'd start there.
