Yamaha G2 Starting Issue

Hi,

Our 1989 Yamaha G2 has recently developed an engine starting issue. The Cart crawls under the Starter Power but struggles to Fire the engine & sometimes Backfires. Once it starts it Runs fine with no indications that anything is wrong.

I have replaced the Spark Plug (the old one didn't look very bad), Removed & Cleaned the Carburetor (nothing bad in it, float is OK, the Idle screw isn't holding the throttle open, the needle-point adjustment screw is open 1.5 turns), Replaced the Fuel Filter & it has Fresh Gas. Also Checked the Coil (4.5 ohms).

Basically I can't find a faulty part & don't know what to Check next.

Appreciate any Guidance.

Thanks,

Jim

You might want to do a compression test. When you do the compression test hold the throttle open. Lest us know how much compression it has.

Compression is 120 - 125 psi, goes up to 135 with squirting some oil into the cylinder. Also found the Valve adjustment a little too tight, set to .04 when cold.

It still spits & sputters at start but then runs fine at speed, will do 28mph.

Make sure all the air filter box connections and lid are sealed good. The older Yamaha golf carts can be hard starting if they're sucking air at any of the air box connections or the lid. 120 lbs is on the low side for compression.
