Hello, I just purchaced an older G-1 and it runs fine but smokes when running and I smell exaust fumes. Does this mean I need a ring job or what.

The G1 is a 2 cycle engine that requires oil to be mixed with the gas. Does the cart still have the oil injection hooked up? If you are mixing the gas, most often it is mixed heavy and smokes more.

Is the cart lifted? Is it over full on oil? I'd start with a compression test and adjusting the valves.

On a lifted Yamaha the engine angle changes so if you fill the oil to the full line on the dipstick it's over full and will cause the engine to smoke. If the compression and valve adjustment checks out OK I'd drain the oil and fill it with 1 quart then put a new full mark on the dip stick.
