Went to hit accelerator and the ground wire from the cart to the first battery started smoking is that a controller problem?

When you say ground wire are you talking about a wire from the frame to a battery? You should never have any grounds from the battery to frame or any metal on a electric cart.

Actually it is the wire from the controller to the driverside battery negative post.

I'd start with changing that cable and any others that are bad. It would be a good time to change them all.
