what is correct engine rotation

I have a 96 club car gas ser no. 54612 and would like to know the proper rotation of engine. I have read that they switched to clockwis rotation in 96 1/2. I removed the starter because the only way that I can get it started was to move the pedal just a little and it would start. If I moved the pedal a lot it would turn over but not start. I removed the starter but did not mark where the are supposed to be hooked up. Not very smart on my part.

I have found out that it is counter clockwise rotation. The starter generator that I took off and the one that I replaced it with is clockwise. Being that it is a clockwise that is wired to be counter clockwise, could that make the rngine turn over slower?

They make two different starters for the two rotations. It sounds to me like you have the wrong starter. Is the cart charging?

Yes, the cart is charging but turns over slow. I had a CW starter rebuilt so I put it on and wired the same and the same thing, it turns over slow
