torque and power or 4x4

Here's my situation. I just purchased a 1997 ezgo. The only undate is a lift kit and a little larger tire. I want to use it at the farm and hunting. My question is: Can I just upgrade motor and controller to get a lot of power, or should I try to install 4x4 kit? I'm a newbie, be easy on me. Thank you.

You could upgrade the battery cables, a GE Beast motor, 400-500 amp controller, posi rear gears and you will have all the power you can use.

Thanks for the adivce. Where do you get a posi gear rear end and what do you think about D and D motors?

Caddie,

FWIW, I have a hunting cart (I have MS so, I had mine built for my by a very nice fellow in Louisiana. I did a lot of research on carts, and it was less costly for me to have him build my cart and ship it to SW Pa. , than to have one of my local guys build on with the options he put on it.).

Now, some of the options I have are an ALLTRAX AXE4855 CONTROLLER and a D&D HIGH TORQUE MOTOR. The Controller is programmable via your laptop so you can adjust it for either low end torque and less top end speed, or more top end speed and less low end torque, or somewhere in the middle. Mine is set for low end torque. My cart is also a 48-V. I've been using this cart for 2 years now and it's been running like a champ. I use it a lot, so it's not like I use it for 3 or 4 weeks and put it away for the rest of the year.

The limited slip differential (posi traction unit) works really well. I take my unit up (and down) some steep hills here in SW Pa and I've not met a hill that the buggy won't climb. Now....I'm not looking to get stuck, or flip it over either. I keep 'em in reason. But I usually go up and down gas well roads and gas pipelines. I have gotton stuck a few times, but my winch has saved me on those occasions.

So, get the posi-traction rear end, go with the D&D motor....they do just fine. I also have the cart lifted and ATV tires. In the snow I put on chains (front and back) and unless I bottom it out in the snow.....I pretty much go where I want.

I hope this helps.

Thanks for the info Dave. Where can you get limited slip rear end? My buggy is a 97 ezgo and is 36v system. Do you think it will work just fine, or should I trash and go to 48 volt. Can my 36 be upgraded to 48 without great expense. Again, thank you.

DaveT,
sounds as you have a very nice setup. You thought it out well. That is the key to building a nice usable cart.

bozo,
To upgrade to 48 you will need a 48 volt controller, solenoid, battery Charger and either 2 more 6 volt batteries or 6 8 volt batteries. Controller $400-$500, Selonoid $40.00 - $80.00,
Charger depends on weither it's new or used $200.00- $500.00 + either 2 batteries or 6 new batteries.

I know B/U sales them for a 98 and up rear end. Here is there link, Rod I hope it's OK!
You may have to swap out your rear end to get the upgrade though!

Well, like the above guys have posted, BU has the limited slip (posi-traction rear end) differential. The limited slip will work just fine with your 36-V system. Again, they gave you some prices on what the upgrade to 48-V would cost.

I'd go with the posi-traction upgrade if your slopin around some mud 'n stuff. Then if you find you need more power, then do the next logical step and upgrade to a 48-V system with better wiring and a better controller.
