starter/generator wiring questions

Hey guys, its been a while since I've posted, been busy with the kids and wife. I am currently working on building a generator. I wanted to use the starter/gen from an 83 ezgo to start the 5 hp briggs and then use a GM alternator and the ezgo starter/gen to charge a bank of 6 volt batteries. My question is, what all do I need? Do I have to use the selenoid and the voltage regulator from the 83, or can I use just any regulator and selenoid? Anyone ever do anything like this or know anything about my situation? TIA

i never used both. used a 5 hp briggs and 100 amp gm style one wire alt. it would start fine with the pull start, it was all that 5 could do to keep rollin' that alt over. burned more gas than it was worth to me

ok, I found a schematic for a starter/gen, now can I just piggy back the GM one-wire alternator with the starter/gen? er wat?
