Starter/Generator issues

Having trouble with my '93 cart. The electric starter/generator will work for a while then quit. Checked voltage on starter side of solenoid and had 11 plus volts. Also have 11 plus volts at starter connection. Pulled starter out and checked brushes, they are fine. Hooked unit up to my heavy duty battery charger/engine starter and the unit ran flawlessly. Cycled several times to see if there was a bad spot on armeture no problems whatsoever. Looking for any ideas anyone might have.

Thanks,
Mike

Have you checked the battery? Have you checked to see if it's charging?

Battery shows 12 volts on meter. Going to re-check brushes to see if they are beyond wear mark. Starter was tested without any load on it, wondering if that makes a difference.

You'll need a digital meter to get a true reading on the battery. You should have around 12.7 volts with the cart not running and around 14 volts with the cart running at half throttle.

In my case the problem was the switch that is activated when the gas pedal is depressed. It is located in a metal box under the floor mat. The box will hold water, and mine was full! Draining the box and replacing the switch solved the problem.

Not only would the starter sometimes not engage, but it would occasionally engage all by itself if the ignition switch was left in the ON position!

i tend to agree with the water in the box under the floor mat i had the same problem with an electric cart. the water can cause a continuous circuit.
