Shift Problem

I am brand new to this forum & any help thrown my way way would be appreciated.
My gas 1996 EZ Go only goes forward.
The transmission shift lever will not engage in neutral or reverse.
In all three positions it will only go forward. I took the seat off & see it has a rocker type mechanism which seems to operate two cables which do move when I engage the shift lever. I am not super handy but willing to attempt the repairs if it not to complicated.

Thanks for your fast reply.
The shifting arms appear to move when I engage the shift lever along with the cables.

when you shift the lever to reverse go back and see if you can push the lever on axle by hand any farther, you may need to rock the cart back and forth a little to get it to go in.

It appears you've been around a golf cart or two because your prognosis was right on!
I followed the cables to the rear of the cart where they hook into the transmission & one was off its "cable guide".
It's hard to get your hand back there to reach the cables but that did the trick!
