Welcome to the forum...

SERIES wound motor test:

Jack the rear tires of the ground and put the cart on jack stands...
Remove the main positive and negative cables form the battery pack...
Spray the 4 studs on the motor with a little penetrating oil...
Mark the cables then remove all four cables from the motor (use a wrench to hold the jam nuts)...
Put a jumper wire from a "A" terminal to an "S" terminal. (Example: A1 to S1)...
Then hook a 12 volt battery or 12 volt battery charger in the 15+ amp range to the remaining "A" and "S" terminal (Example A2 and S2)...

You can do this test in both directions. Just switch the positive and negative cables from your power source to the opposite posts. If it only turns one way doing this test there's a problem with the motor...

While a poster (HotRodCarts) is here who seems to know his stuff, may I ask another question? I am rebuilding an old cart built on an EZ Go 1984 chassis. It is "completely" disassembled. There is a switch from the dash marked "overdrive". The circut from that switch goes through an extra contact on the accelerator board micro switch that is closed only when the accelerator is wide open and that makes an "extra" solenoid close. When that solenoid closes it shorts two of the motor connections together. My problem is it is disconnected and I don't know which two motor connections to connect the wires from the extra solenoid too. That is what happens when you take something apart and not take pictures. My wiring connection drawing I hand drew disappeared. jbbor

Its what's called a shunt. Shunts are very hard on series electric motors and is probably why it's been disconnected.

I appreciate the advice but, please, someone with correct knowledge tell me where to connect the shunt solenoid to the motor. I'm the one who disconnected it, while dismantling the cart, and lost the diagram I drew. jbbor

It is a 1984 E-Z Go Marathon chassis modified by Westen Golf & Country. My wifes uncle used this cart for almost 20 years without any major problems. It has sat in a barn for the last several years. I had the motor gone through at a motor generator shop and they found nothing seriously wrong with it. They turned the armature and put in new bearings. They said the winding were in good shape. As I said, I made a diagram of the wiring, including the overdirve wiring but that part is lost (the puppy ate it). I know most advice says forget it but I want to put it back like it was.
