Replaced Stock Controller With 400 Amp No Increase In Speed

Newbie here, learning more from Cartaholics Golf Cart Forum than anyplace else!!
I have a 2004 EZGO PDS cart. I replaced the 275 amp controller with a 400amp controller, along with 6 gauge cables.

Maybe it is just me, but I expected a signifigant increase in torque and some increase in speed. There is a noticeable increase in torque, but I can't tell any difference in my speed. The cart is driven mainly on my property, which is fairly level to sloping.

If anyone can tell me what difference I should expect, I would appreciate it.

Thank you in advance.

PS: I also installed a speed chip with the 400 amp controller.

There should be NO speed increase with a controller upgrade, only a nice bump in torque. The only ways to go faster are:

Increase the voltage
Increase the tire diameter
Install high speed gears in the diff
Install a higher rpm motor

Anyone tells ya different is blowin' smoke or sellin' snake oil.

I am a NEWBIE!!!!!!!!!!!! This is my first cart. Got to put the lift kit under it and add some wheels. Give me a chance to enjoy this one for a while.

Thank you again for you help.

Is it possible the the "Turbo" isn't turned on? Also - I didn't think that you could still use the speed chip in an upgraded controller....

Am I missing something?

I was wondering the same thing about the "chip" in the 400 amp controller. The only time I've seen carts with it was when they have the stock PDS controller. With the speed chip in the stock controller a PDS cart should run about 20 mph on hard level surfaces. You should gain speed and torque on a PDS cart when upping the amps of the controller.
What brand is your new controller? Do you have the part #?

I am pretty sure the part # is 1206MX. It is made for a PDS cart. The brand is a Curtis, and they supplied the speed chip with the new controller.

Any more input, please advise.

They might make it in a 400 amp also. The 1206MX is what comes in a stock PDS cart. I have several here that were swapped out for Alltrax DCX500's.
With the DCX500 their is a VERY noticeable difference from the stock controller in both speed and torque.
If it's a 400 amp your cart should be running at least 20 mph if the batteries are good. I have never seen a 400 amp that uses the chip but that doesn't mean they don't make one.
Their should be a tag on the controller with more #'s on it. If you can get that info we should be able to figure out exactly what you have.

Hotrod, thank you for the info. I will look for more numbers and report back on here.

Thanks again,

The 1206 refers to the "footprint" of the unit, it's physical size. Perhaps the MX is an upgraded high current unit? Like a Freedom cart?

All of the stock EZGO PDS controllers I have here are MX's also. That's why I asked him to try to get the rest of the numbers off of the controller. ;)

Here's the info from the curtis controller website:

"Curtis Part Number: 1206MX
The controller offered on this page only works with separately excited motors with regenerative braking. Not for use with series wound motors. The 1206MX controllers are built by Curtis and are rated at 36V, 275-300 Amps, and ITS throttle input. This controller is proprietary to the E-Z-GO PDS."

The progression of events on my cart was basically this... (6" lift and 23" tires)

Stock: 14.7 MPH
Speed Chip: 18.9 MPH
500 amp controller and D&D Motor (76-51): 22.9mph
Switch to 48volts: (est) 29-31mph.

Adding the motor and controller yeilded very few speed results while offering nice gains in torque.
