Replace Brushes in Starter

Anyone have a procedure or method to replace brushes in a DS starter? I think mine are bad. It seems to struggle turning over sometimes and may take a few tries to get it to spin the engine. Battery is new and cable all look clean and tight.

Have new brushes in hand., pull rubber plugs off gen. note bottom plug has water drain built in, unbolt old brushes and pull back spring , remove old brushes, insert new ones, bolt new ones in ,replace plugs, reinstall gen. Should blow gen. out with air while plugs are out.

Eyeball the commutator for wear when replacing the brushes. Worn commutator contacts expose the insulation between them and prevent good brush contact. Turn if necessary and relieve the insulation. Best done by someone with an armature lathe.
