Radiator filling for l/c V-twins

After draining the antifreeze and then refilling, are you suppose to fill the plastic tank too? The service manual for my Kawasaki engine only states to fill the radiator up to the bottom of the filler neck. It doesn't say anything about the small tank on the radiator. I figured the tank is for the coolant to drain into when it gets hot but there are low and high markings on the tank. Seems like it should always be filled at least to the cold mark, right?

Also what's the normal operating temp for these engines? I think the highest mine got up to was 170 degrees.
Thanks

Thanks HRC. It does make sense to fill it to the full mark.

Yepper, fill the catch can to the cold mark after you top off the radiator, just like you would do a car. The Briggs L/C's operate at 180 degrees. Atleast that's when the thermostat opens. Go pound on it and it will get warmer. Mine will hit 200 degrees pounding on it in the desert.
