Questions About Harley Davidson Golf Cart

I am just starting to dig into this Harley cart I was given about 9 days ago;
the reason I got it was the PO's son was "supposed" to fix it but never seemed to have time.
The carb issue; I have handled; the PO's son did "1/2 a rebuild"
there is 1 loose stray wire that I think I have ID'd as to where it is supposed to go (gas tank float)
I have located a "parts cart" (body/frame ONLY; powertrain gone) to provide me with a good left fender and center noe cone.

but the main issue with this cart I can see now is that it will start and go forward but no reverse. I do get a "click" out of the solenoid so I take it taht means that it is working; but the starter will not turn (or try to) in reverse. there is a brand new F-N-R switch on it, for which I have a reciept that came with the "box of extras" for a whopping $185. (damn that's crazy) that the PO recently bought the F-N-R switch. I see remnants of an old busted F-N-R in that box as well. it appears to be wired correctly.
I mean the starter works going forward; and the solenoid clicks when flipped to "Reverse" which verifies the switch is sending power at least to the solenoid which is also clicking; but the starter won't turn in that direction. If it bworks one way does that mean it is "OK"? or could my no reverse issue be within the starter/generator?

also; where would I get a new shock? Is there a common automotive app that fits?
and how but the body pivot bushings? after 37 years, I could see where they may have an issue. (I'm an old front end alignment guy that has changed his share of suspension bushings over the years) Once I verify this thing works and get the mechanical bugs out, I plan to take it all the way down to the bare frame and blast/paint it.

the parts cart I am after is an '80; is the frame and body the same as my 73? If so I may "play around" with my ugly cart and restore the '80 frame then transfer the pieces over as I clean/paint/ "go thru" them.

wow. even non running and missing a few pieces I'm surprised at the number of offers I've had to sell this thing in the last week or so. Nope (not yet anyway) at least til I get it going and "play around" on it myself for a while. .

Napa stocks a shock that is extremely close to the original for less than half the cost of OEM. I have the number if you want it.

Yeah that would be great.

next Q; I took the starter/gen into the local starter shop; they told me it needed brushed (worn beyond "nubby") and bearings, and it had alot of corrosion in it; they quoted me $95; that's $50 for labor/$45 in parts; I told them "fix it"; I asked if the worn brushes and corrosion would cause "no reverse"; they told me that it very well could but they couldnt say for sure til they got it back together to test it;
today they called me w/ an update; I guess they found more wrong; (i left my phone in the truck since I wouldnt hear it over the gas powered welder and grinders I was running anyway) and I guess the price of repair just went "up"
I'm afraid to call em tomorrow to see by "how much".....
what's a "good" limit to set on how much to spend repairing one of these S/Gs before I bail and just look for a different one?

Napa shock part # 94038. It is a tight fit but works without any problems. 16.99
Couldn't find any specs on the gear ratio. Variable pitch on the tranny/clutch is 14.3-41.5

well; I found out (I think) why I had "Forward" but not "reverse"; The starter shop called and said 1 "pair' of field coils was fubarred; so being these are "north" and "south" pairs I can see how that would cause non function in one direction;
on another note I talked to the PO the other day regarding a few missing pieces; hoping he may still have them laying around (nope) but he claims to have had $850-900 tied up in buying it+trying to get it going I dont know what he originally paid for it but I have reciepts for nearly $400 worth of misc parts for it....
the starter gen bill is now up to $150.......
