I am just starting to dig into this Harley cart I was given about 9 days ago;
the reason I got it was the PO's son was "supposed" to fix it but never seemed to have time.
The carb issue; I have handled; the PO's son did "1/2 a rebuild"
there is 1 loose stray wire that I think I have ID'd as to where it is supposed to go (gas tank float)
I have located a "parts cart" (body/frame ONLY; powertrain gone) to provide me with a good left fender and center noe cone.
but the main issue with this cart I can see now is that it will start and go forward but no reverse. I do get a "click" out of the solenoid so I take it taht means that it is working; but the starter will not turn (or try to) in reverse. there is a brand new F-N-R switch on it, for which I have a reciept that came with the "box of extras" for a whopping $185. (damn that's crazy) that the PO recently bought the F-N-R switch. I see remnants of an old busted F-N-R in that box as well. it appears to be wired correctly.
I mean the starter works going forward; and the solenoid clicks when flipped to "Reverse" which verifies the switch is sending power at least to the solenoid which is also clicking; but the starter won't turn in that direction. If it bworks one way does that mean it is "OK"? or could my no reverse issue be within the starter/generator?
also; where would I get a new shock? Is there a common automotive app that fits?
and how but the body pivot bushings? after 37 years, I could see where they may have an issue. (I'm an old front end alignment guy that has changed his share of suspension bushings over the years) Once I verify this thing works and get the mechanical bugs out, I plan to take it all the way down to the bare frame and blast/paint it.
the parts cart I am after is an '80; is the frame and body the same as my 73? If so I may "play around" with my ugly cart and restore the '80 frame then transfer the pieces over as I clean/paint/ "go thru" them.
