Peafowl

While on vacation in Florida about 7 years ago...we saw some peafowl...all India Blue in color...well...my wife wanted to try and raise some...we have had good and back luck over the years...our first hen laid but never hatched...died...then the second hen turned out to be a male...and two of our adult India Blue males died...so over the last few years our single pea hen has finally hatched and raised 2 male's...the White being the "dad"...this is her third time setting...with the first batch of eggs being eaten by a fox…and almost the hen...the second setting hatched but "disappeared"...so we've been pretty happy to have these make it this far...partly because they have been in a large pen inside our barn since last August...I just turned them out this past Saturday to get adjusted to the "world"...and when night began to fall...the flew up in one of the large oaks to roost...with this happening I knew they would be alright...

...so we have finally accomplished what began many years ago...

Appreciate that HRC...I need to see if I can find some pics of the India Blue's we used to have...at one time we had over 100 chickens...with about 35 guineas...most were hatched by us...but we only have enough chickens to keep a few family members in eggs now...along with the guineas eggs which make an excellent omelet!!!

Very nice Cerb! The "home grown eggs" makes me think of some chickens I used to have. They were cross between White Leggorns and White Rocks.
Talk about a large Egg! The eggs would have scared the grocers and egg producers who sold what they called Extra LARGE eggs. My hens eggs makes store bought eggs look like Sparrow eggs! :) And the few Hens I had laid so many that I sold some of the eggs on a regular basis to another family with 3 kiddos. We always had lots of eggs and they did too. Gosh it makes me miss the Farm Life!

Thanks for sharing.

You know it's kinda sad...there are 150 acres total to the family farm...we live on 50 acres...wife’s uncle runs about 45 head of cows...some of the land is leased out for planting...there’s woods…creeks…ponds...our barn is about 40' x 80'…three big lofts…we plant a big garden every year…in our yard we have…figs…peach trees…pear trees…pecan trees…hickory trees…and grape vines…bee hives galore...with all of the honey extracted right here...our two kids...15 & 17...have no desire with any of it...they just don't realize now what they are missing...
