Over Reving in Forward

My EZGO 295 2007 car now over revs when first accelerating until I feel the built grab then it continues to accelerate normally. This problem only seems to happen when shifting from Reverse to Forward. Problem began after my Granddaughter flipped the F/R switch from F to R while the cart was rolling backwards at about 2 mph. The slipping and over reving stops once the cart reaches about 5 mph. Any suggestions on what I should check.

Thanks,
Steve

the first thing i would check is for a stripped brake drum, make sure that the axle nut that holds the drum on is not rotating without the wheel turning.

It is is a brake problem would I not experience the same reving in both forward as well as reverse?

not necessarily, did you check the axle nuts to see if they move independently of the drum? ez go's are known to strip drums. it maybe the engagement pins in the diff but why not start with the most common and easy to check.

I obtained a copy of my cart's service manual. I have given it a read. I am new to mechanical cart maintenance but, I do have years of radio tech experience so I think I should be able to handle this task. I would like to confirm that to check the hubs, I simply need to remove caps and put a wrench on the axle nuts to see if they turn while the cart is at rest with the brakes off.

Thanks, Steve

you can also apply the brake and start the cart and look to see if the nut spins in the brake drum.
