No Spark

What is the down side to leaving the ground wire disconnected from the Limiter? I had no spark, so I disconnected the ground wire, now it runs. Mechanic at shop says I would hurt the engine if I left it off. He wants to sell me a Limiter for $210.00 for replacement. Would this be a good move, or is it OK to run with out the ground wire?
The cart is governed to run at 25 miles per hour. Limiter was not touched for this purpose.

It all depends on how high the engine is revving. Did it ever hit the rev limiter when the limiter was working? If it didn't you should be okay. You might want to get a tach to be safe tho.

Thank you for your response. I appreciate your input.
I decided to go with replacing the limiter. Actually, I found the right golf cart coil/ignitor and RPM limiter on E-Bay for $113.00. Not a bad price for everything it would take to solve my spark problem. If anyone else is looking for just the limiter, I found one on LVS golf parts for $99.00
