i say if there was connection problems in the past there most likely are more, check all your grounds from the engine to the frame and the ground from the ignitor.
it could be a bad ignitor, a bad rpm limitor or coil...............i would go after the ignitor and limitor 1st................................also check spark plug and change if need and coil wire i have seen them go bad
