I have a Yamaha 36 volt cart early '90s model. It has been working fine, but I recently replaced a couple batteries, and all of a sudden my Lestronic II charger does'nt want to act right. When I plug it into the charging receptacle on the cart, it humms really loud like normal, but the ammeter stays at zero. And if I leave it like this for more than 10minutes or so, it starts to smell really hot. I can't tell what is going on. The fuse on the front of the charger seems to be intact. My batteries are getting low, but I don't think there is anything wrong with the cart. Maybe I'm wrong.... Please tell me what you all think!

I have been playing with it a little this evening. I unhooked the ammeter and bypassed it. Nothing changed. I took a non-contact voltage indicator and checked the wire going from the charger to the cart and it shows that there IS voltage in the wire. Please tell me what could be making my batteries not want to take any charge!! I am afraid to keep it hooked up this way. I don't want to burn the place down!

Welcome to the forum.

Check the voltage at the charger receptacle on the cart with a digital volt meter and let us now what it is.

When you replaced the batteries, did you also hook the charging leads back up?
What is the total voltage of your pack? It needs to be at least 28v or the charger will not activate.
If all of that is OK, what voltage is the charger charging at?
