Need a little help

I have a 99 ezgo and was looking for some help. I was driving it yesterday and was running just fine, hopped off it to grab a few things got back on the cart and it was dead as could be. I have 12 volts at the starter when I push on the gas pedal so I assuming that things are working properly up to that point? I am looking for some ideas on what to look for what might be wrong. I am leaning toward the starter/alternator but I am not sure how to test it yet. Any help would be greatly helpful.

the starter brushes may be worn and or sticking, tap the starter with a hammer and see if it turns over. if so the brushes are most likely the problem.

Thanks, I checked the brushes and they are fine, I ended up replacing the soleniod, but in the end it was a bad connection on the negative side of the battery. So heres a tip to all reading this..check your battery terminal connections very good it might save someone a little bit of money and a day of trouble shooting!!! Thanks for the tip on the brushes, at least I know those are good now.
