You can hook whatever voltage you want to a cart motor. The sky is the limit! The limiting factor is what do you want out of it? You could hook 72 volts up to it now and take a chance that the motor will hold out long enough to run it. If it's a coil cart I wouldn't suggest doing 72 volts through the coils though.

Take the motor have it checked and built $400 - $500
Good high voltage controller $500.00 - $1000.00
6 x 12 volt batteries $600.00 - $1000.00
6-1 rear gear set $600.00
Charger for 72 volts $500.00 +
Have general maintance done to cart for the speed $500.00 up depending on what you do verses what is done by a shop.

Well I just stripped my wheelie cart and sold it all. I finally striped the factory 1993 axles out of it and put 3 in the drivers side in less than a year so I gave it up and got rid of it. I have a 60MPH cart now in the 1/8 mile.
Good luck with the project. If you want a motor for that cart PM me and I have some info for you. If it was me I'd be looking for a Kawasaki rear end out of a Club Car to use.
