Install State of Charge Gauge on Golf Cart

I am about to install a 36 volt state of charge gauge on my golf cart but it came with no directions. Do I connect a positive and a negative wire from the first battery or the last battery? Probably a dumb question but any input would be greatly appreciated.

Positive to the first battery negative to the sixth battery. It should be the same batteries your charger wires are connected too. depending on the state of charge gauge/meter it may also have a third wire that would go to the key switch.
