I've been testing the golf cart solenoid big pole to big pole and found one i think is bad, but my dad thinks im testing them wrong. So how do you test them?

The solenoid has 4 posts, 2 small and 2 large.
The small posts are the control (coil).
Use an ohmmeter or continuity tester, it should show continuity or resistance.
The large posts are the contact points the connect the main battery power together.
Use an ohmmeter or continuity tester, it should show open or infinite resistance when no power is applied to the coil. With the coil energized (solenoid on) it should show continuity or a very small resistance.

doug, just one more question, the cart is a 36 volts, if i upgraded to 48 volt solenoids is that all I'd need to do to be able to run a 48 volt system?

I can't answer the conversion question on those older Club Cars but normally the newer ones require a change to controller and a new pot box to control it.
I'm not sure if the Caroche's are good hot rod candidates, I think you may be stuck with 36v.
Hopefully someone with some experience will pipe up here and offer up some suggestions.
