Help with KF82

I have a 91 club car with a KF82 flathead motor that was running before I replaced the rod in it and when I put it back together now it won't start. It is backfiring through the carb. I have aligned the marks on the camshaft and even tried turning the cam 180 degrees to see if that would make a difference. It has good strong compression and consistent spark. The only other thing I can think of is that I switched the flywheel with the one off my 86 Club Car which also has a KF82 motor, Could that be the reason this engine won't start? I have been working on this for several weeks now and am at my wits end with it!! Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!

the fact that ir ran before it blew up i would say you can rule out a pluggeed exhaust. How about the exhaust valve clearence? there is a little wafer shim on the bottom of valve, if it fell off you have way too much clearence and the exhast valve barely opens. this will cause a backfire in the carb . When you align the crankshaft and camshaft are both valves closed and piston on top dead center? Is the flywheel keyed the same as the old one?
