headlight switch

I have a 1989 electric club car. Occasionally, after driving at night with the lights on, the headlights turn off for a while. No matter what I do, the lights won't work! After it sits for a while, they'll come back on. I already ruined my last set of batteries by leaving the switch on and parking it! Naturally, when I wasn't home they came back on and drained the batteries down to nothing. Batteries are too expensive to have that happen again plus it makes driving at night a real challenge to say the least! Does someone know what could be causing this? Thanks

Thanks "HotRodCarts" and "Shadowman" for your quick response! I have a long weekend to to give my cart a little TLC. I'll check those and let you know what I come up with. I couldn't help but notice, "HotRodCarts", that you were member number #3 and have had 5795 posts!! I know I have read a lot of them and they have helped me more than you can imagine. Thanks again

How are your lights connected to the power source? Are you using a voltage reducer or are the lights connected directly to the batteries? Not all hedlight/taillight kits will work when they are connected to 16 volts (or more!!!). Check your taillight lenses and see if they have melted spots in the middle of the lense. This is a sure sign that the lights have too much voltage going to them.

Well, so much for the "long weekend for golf cart TLC!" Anyway,When I finially got back to the cart I found that the headlites wires were put together with the blue connectors, the kind that cut through the insulation. I've never had much luck with them in the past so I rewired them with soldered connections and heat shrink. The lights are so much brighter and so far, no problems with getting hot. Thanks alot for all the help!
