Harley Davidson Golf Cart Won't Start - Need a Service Manual

Hello,

I am new from Upstate NY. I just purchased a 1972 Harley Davidson D3 for $20. I was told that it ran in the recent past. I am not a mechanic, but my father is and I can make due when I need to.

1. Where is the best place for me to get a manual for this?
2. The engine turns over, there is spark, the compression seems good, I put a little gas in the carburetor and it blew it back out when I turned it over. Any suggestions?
3. The air filter is missing. Any suggestions on a good place to pick up a new one?

Thanks in advance

I believe Radical Golf Carts carries the manuals.

I'd do a compression test with a gauge.

If the filter element only is missing you can get that at Radical Golf Carts or any other online cart parts store.

It has been a while since I got the cart. I have not done anything to it. I did a compression test on the engine with a guage. I cannot remember what it was, but it did check out.

It needs a new carburetor. It looks like I have three options:

1. rebuild the one that is on it.
2. Buy a cheap one- looks like I could get one for $30.
3. Buy a good one. Looks like they cost $150-180.

Does anyone have any suggestions/experience that would help?

I'd steer clear of the cheap ones. Either rebuild yours or buy a good new one.
You might just need to clean the carburetor that's on it now.

I have a cheap one, $16 shipped from Amazon. It works just fine, and my 80 goes like stink. While your at it, consider a new throttle cable. About $23. find them on Ebay.

There are cheap Chinese carburetors on Ebay for about $30 and they do seem to work.
The fuel pump is in the carburetor so a new one should be looked at.
Replace all fuel lines from the tank to the carburetor.
There is also a hose inside the tank to pickup fuel.
Change that too.
Make sure inside of tank is clean.
Give it a squirt of starting fluid and turn it over.
If it wants to run for a short time, the ignition system is working and you have a fuel issue.
If it will not try to start on ether, you have an electrical issue and can also have a fuel issue too.
It can be a process to get them to run.
