EZGO Marathon Golf Cart Troubleshooting

I need some 1992 EZGO Marathon golf cart troubleshooting information. What is the sequence of events (or current flow path) as you depress the accelerator pedal to go. Assuming the key switch is on and the forward and reverse lever is in forward position.

It would depend on what happenes when you press the accelerator. Does the solenoid click? What's your total battery pack voltage?

The EZGO Marathon wiring diagram is excellent. I believe I can use it to troubleshoot the golf cart. Buy the way the solenoid clicks. It will go sometimes. Mostly not.

Will do HRC. Also is there a switch of any kind in the circuit with the pot switch and if so what is its function. (Not counting the key switch)

Thanks Cattyal.

Yes there is a micro switch for the accelerator but if your solenoid clicks the micro switch is working.

Another thing you can check if the cables and forward and reverse switch check out ok is the potentiometer and make sure it goes smoothly from 0K and no throttle to 5K at full throttle.

Thanks HRC. We are homing in on the problem. I have pack voltage coming out of the controller and through the F&R switch.
I will check the pot ohms as you suggested next. Also the motor leads look real rusty. I put a little PB Blaster on them and will let them soak over night then remove the cables and clean up the connections.
I may not get back to it until Friday but I will post the results.

Again , Many Thanks ............ Carryal

OK HRC/Others,

The pot shows a reading of 0 to 7k - Not 0-5k. Is this ok? Also jumping the solenoid will not make the motor run. I disconnected the motor and ran the manual run wiring hook up on the motor and it runs.
Hooked all wires back up. Still no go. Then out of the blue while checking voltage between b+ and M1 as per the manual the motor started running( with pedal depressed of course). It is now intermittent. Some times it will run sometimes not.
Is it possible for the controller to be intermittent? I monitored the pot during the run/no run event and the pot continues to function wheather the motor runs or not.

This thing has me stumped for now. Very open to ideas or other checks.

Thanks Guy's................... Carryal

I recently had to replace a controller in a Marathon that was intermittent. So yes, it is possible. If you are sure that your F&R assembly is making good contact, then do the controller output test during failure. If solenoid still clicks during failure and controller is not putting out voltage, then that is most likely your problem.

Ok Guys,

Done all of the above. Can't pin it down yet. One thing though, once it runs it will continue most of the time until you stop for a while 15-20 minutes or so and come back it will not go again.
Doing voltage checks even when it won't run I am showing pack voltage at the motor terminals which kind of rules out the common stuff. Makes you think bad motor. However when you do the manual wiring test on the motor it runs.
I believe it is the motor or controller one, or maybe both, but I know that is unlikely.
Anyone ever run into this problem. Ideas very welcome. :dazed:
