EZGO Golf Cart Driven Clutch

I'm working on a 1989 EZGO Marathon 2 Stroke gas golf cart. When I put the drive belt on the driven clutch, while one side of the driven clutch is really wide the other side of the driven clutch is really skinny not allowing the belt to go in the slot its supposed to and it stops the motor from spinning. Is the clutch bad? How can I fix it?

Hi Trevor,

Before you go much further, lets look into a possible problem with the driven clutch.

Take both of your hands and place them on each sheave in a 12 and 3 o'clock position. Try to rotate the sheaves in opposite directions from one another. They should only move a few inches then stop. They should not be able to be freely rotated, and they should not be stuck together.

From what you are describing, it sounds as if your driven clutch has not closed completely. That would make putting the belt on very difficult, as it effectively makes the belt shorter. A replacement cam or new clutch would be needed in that case.

Have a good one,
Bob

Well it actually was screwed up since every time I went over a certain RPM the clutch would start to speed up then jerk the whole cart and tighten back up.

That is a sign of a worn drive clutch.

Feel along the moveable sheave (the part that goes towards the engine). Feel for any ridges, especially towards the bottom of the clutch.

Is your drive clutch cover brass colored or black?
A little known info: you can put a 4 cycle drive clutch on a 3PG engine (89-93). It is much smoother, but you will loose just a little top end speed - 1-2 mph
