sounds like a PDS cart. is the Forward/Reverse switch on the dash? Last time I had a cart that happened to had to replace motor and controller. Is the solinoid clicking?

I agree with rhgc. If you could smell hot electrical while towing there's a good chance the motor and controller are shot. Is it a DCS or PDS? If it's a PDS try putting it in diagnostic mode and see if it gives you any codes while driving the cart.

Well I would say the motor is shot. If the cart moves under it's own power but lacks power then it's in the motor not the controller.

Did the diagnostic check and got no trouble codes, only the first four beeps. Went thru the whole box trouble shooting proceedure, from ezgo manual, and all voltages at pins, connections, etc. were correct on control box. I assume the motor is the problem. Can they be rebuilt?

Yes the motor can be rebuilt. EMP does very good work and their prices are fair. Here's a link
EMP - Electrical Motor Products

You could also put a want ad in the wanted or for sale forum here. A lot of members have upgraded motors and may have the stock motor for sale.
