Electric EZGO Quits Running At Full Throttle

My son Adam has a 1988 EZGO electric golf cart that he bought for 50 bucks. Over the last couple of months we went through the cart and changed all the wires, the pot box and the forward and reverse switch and new solenoid. We got up to the campground today and he tells me the golf cart quits running at full throttle. I once heard that the pot box causes this. We replaced the pot box with a new one. The batteries are good and read 6 volts. Can a dead battery cause this? Thanks for the help.

I'd start with checking the battery voltage in each battery. If each of them is at lease 6 volts then check the entire battery pack. You should get 36+ volts.

If the batteries check out ok try testing the pot box. Did the cart get wet? Sometimes they'll have the problem after you wash the cart or a heavy rain. If the cart didn't get wet you can test the pot box by taking the two wires off the controller and with a ohm meter you should see 0 ohms then slowly press the throttle pedal and the meter should smoothly go to 5000-5500 ohms at full throttle. If the reading is erratic you need a new pot box. If the reading at full throttle is slightly higher than 5500 ohms you may be able to adjust the pot box to the correct setting.

I'd say the battery is your problem. You better check them all. If one froze and busted the others probably froze to. Don't worry about asking questions here. Your not wasting anyones time...

HotRodCarts, thank you for everything. You guys are on top of things. I'll put new batteries in for him, now my worry is the other golf carts.
We have 5 so my fingers are crossed. Never had a problem before but hopefully it was because they were so old.
I should of gave them some attention in the fall. thanks for your help happy carting.

I'm stumped, I changed batteries in the 1988 today and the same thing. It goes good press it to the floor dies out lift it up a little and it goes good. Checked the batteries all read 6 volts, but I did not know how to test the pot box like you last stated. Can you please get me thru it. I was wondering maybe the batteries need to be charged more? I installed the new use batteries and than ran it, left it on the charger tonight so should be full by the morning. Once again thank you for your time.

bcgc,
sounds like you changed old batts with old batts, load test each batt and then test the whole pack llike rhgc suggested.
you will probably find a weak batt or two
