E-Z-GO Golf Cart Needs Batteries

Hi I am new to golf carts. I bought a E-Z-GO golf cart that needs work and I assume batteries. The battery charger does not come on. I believe there needs to be some charge to get the charger to kick on. This car has (6) 12 volt batteries, but I am told it is a 36 volt. I want to replace the batteries. Should this have (6) 6 volt batteries or am I missing something?
thanks for the help

it is a 1983, the existing batteries have clearly labeled 12 volt batteries by c&d technologies, hi rate batteries. Could this be ?
thanks

Yes it's possible that they're two 36 volt packs wired parallel or the cart was running on 72 volts. But originally the cart would of had six 6 volt batteries. If you could post some close up pictures oh the battery pack we would know how they have it wired.

If you decide to change batteries, try 5-6V and 1- 8V. This gives you 38V Your charger will work fine as long as it is not charging over 41V. I have did this several times and it works great. Moer power and speed.

Not a good idea.

The pack won't chage completly with one 8 volt battery in the pack. I'm sure keeping them in balance would be tough to.

Bad idea.
All this will do is ruin the 5x6v batteries and undercharge the 8v. 36v chargers have a finishing stage of about 46v.
