Diesel Engine in a Golf Cart

Hey guys I need your opinion on this diesel engine. It is a 10hp and is supposed to be new. What would the performance be on this? It looks to be nicely compact so I wouldnt run into the issue I am having with my snowmobile engine swap. How do you think this would be in a golf cart? It looks like a nice little setup. Wonder how reliable these are. I never had a diesel and dont know much about them. Would a 10hp be sluggish? What questions should I ask the seller? Is that a fair price?

Rated Speed(rpm): 3000/3600

Now I'm certainly no expert, but this figure confuses me. A trucker once told me that his rig operated within a 600 RPM power band and that is the reason they have so many gears. This would lead me to believe that these 10hp engines are not suitable for the requirements of the golf cart world because they do not operate at a low enough RPM to keep the clutches from engaging.

Or am I reading this wrong and making assumptions?

Right or wrong, idle speed IS an important consideration in a cart.

Thanks guys for your input but...

Well scratch that idea. :D I dont want an engine from a company that doesn't exist anymore. Its a neat little engine but the performance is a mystery. I have a question and it can be applied to this engine or the vtwins, where do you plug the wires to? In the 10th picture there are a bunch of wires how do they join the original golf cart electrical system? If I did an engine swap that is where I would get stuck. Even the vtwin has stray wires. How do you make the electric start work? Is there a lot of saudering involved? What vtwin is best to use? Is there a certain shaft size? Is this what most people use? Whats a built in water pump?

Oh man that really is for a water pump! Who would waste such a nice engine??

Will any of the vtwins fit on Walkntalls swing arm motor mount? Does it matter if its a briggs or honda 18-24hp?

Ok one more post before I shut up...
You know those 24hp vanguard engines that run around $1200-1400 do they come with everything needed to get it running besides the motormount/swingarm, gas tank, muffler and clutch? Do they come with the alternator, starter solenoid and all that good stuff? Most of the ones I have seen dont say anything about those parts. Are they parts that you just expect to get when you buy an engine? The reason I ask is here is a 31hp Vanguard for $2120 and it comes with everything except fuel tank, muffler, swing arm and clutch.

There are so many different engine setups out there. The hardest part of this engine swap for me is proving to be buying the right engine! Somebody might be buying my motorcycle for $2200 this week so that is the amount I have to work with. Then the other bare necessities after then engine would be clutch, swing arm, and A-arm suapension. That will be in excess of $3000. Man they arent kidding when they say you gotta pay to play. Oh where to start...

You may have to do a lil fabbing to get some of the smaller vtwins to fit the motor mount. I believe his set up is actually for a 24 hp honda. Pretty much all stock electrical stuff from the cart will be removed and all new ran. Its aalot easier that way lol. Find and engine and let us know. You can use your stock clutch just have it machined to the size of shaft you end up with and put a new spring in.

Thanks guys for all your help. As soon as I find the right engine I'll let yall know. Im looking for a 24hp Vanguard and hopefully Walkntalls swing arm will fit in a workhorse. I mean it should since the 350cc engine is interchangeable with the 295. Is it better to buy the engine from the internet or a local store like a lawn mower dealer or northern tool?

BTW the vangaurd is a 23 hp. Yes the mount will fit your EZGO Workhorse also. I have it in my cart and I HAVE ABUSED IT I had to drop the front of the swing arm a couple of inches since I only have a 4 inch lift (damn newer ezgos). But I have snagged it once, tree stumps and its still holding on!!!

HA! I heard of this place but never new where it was. You guys have been over here having fun without me!

Yeah with little to no modifications any v-twin will fit on the motor mount. If any mods are needed it would be slotting the motor mount holes toward the rear a little. I can also get a 350cc modified EZGO motor at a pretty good price with a 350cc core exchange, it's suppose to be 16hp. And of course it bolts right in. I haven't tried one yet and I dont know any techincal data on it yet, but I'm tempted.

No sure don't, atleast I have seen any yet. I don't know alot about the CC. I could be wrong, but I believe there is a 350cc motor that goes in the Carryall.

Frank can you give me the deminsions of your V-twin motor mount length and width? How many inches off set is the heim joint mounting bracket thing? Im trying to determine if it will fit in a workhorse and also what engines will fit on it from norther tool. Although their prices are kinda high.

I dont have the dimentions handy, but it should work in a EZGO Workhorse. I've sold a few to Workhorse owners and no issues were reported back to me. It is jigged for the 24 Honda, but the 23 Briggs is about 1/16" difference in the motor mount pattern. And the other engines will fit on it as well.

Frank your workhorse looks great! I wish I would've gone with those rims instead of the black deltas.

Im a little bummed out that these vtwins cost as much as car engines. Oh well I guess you gotta pay to have the sickest cart on the street. :)

So whats the verdict on this diesel engine is it crap?

OK so if I buy this engine right now what else is needed before turning the key? Does somebody make a wiring harness? Why does it have a key in the engine?
