Cushman Commander Humming When Trying To Start

I just bought a Cushman Commander recently. I drove it around yesterday but noticed when starting it, there was a sort of humming when it's trying to start sound rather than the lug-lug-lug sound as it typically emits when starting. After sitting for a couple of hours, it only makes that humming sound and won't turn over at all. I though it might have been a low battery, but tried jumping it and same result. Any thoughts?

It could be a bad battery or battery cable connection. Or it might be the brushes in the starter/generator. Try turning the engine by hand a little then try starting it. Check that all your cable connections are good also...

Thank you for that tip!! After several tries, I was able to get it started. In looking closer, the "humming" sound I referred to earlier is the Starter/Generator spinning and the belt is not slipping. What do you think this means? As you can tell, I'm no mechanic but determined to learn.

Chances are the brushes are shot in the starter/generator. I think there's rubber inspection plugs you can pop out to see how the brushes are. Also make sure all your connections are good, especially the ground wire to the frame.
