cranks fine

My brothers cart (86 ezgo ) cranks fine but won't rev up at all , it will run at idle all day smooth but press the petal and it dies . Could this be a stopped up muffler ?

It's actually cranking then with just a very small amnount of throttle pressure it just sits there and runs good , real smooth , press the petal enough to go and it dies .

It's possible it could be the muffler. You can unbolt it from the head and see if it makes any difference. I'd give the carb a good cleaning too.

will do ,, I went from none to two on these 2 cycle ezgo's within 3 days , I traded for 1 and my brother bought 1 So my learning curve just became a lattered wall .

Did you check the compression? Have you tried to rev it and give it some choke? Sounds stupid, but will it rev in reverse?

compression = 85
dies when choked
reverse no different
I had already checked the easy things , also replaced all rubber gas & vaccum lines, fuel filter , took gas tank off and cleaned it , changed air filter and cheched all intake hoses , everything short of the old witch woman down by the creek .

Yup. At the very least, I see new rings in your future. Maybe a new piston. Most of the time you can clean up the jug. Muriatic acid.

I pulled the carb did a soaking clean on it with a carb bath cleaner , washed it out good opened all the small openings with a torch tip cleaner , cleaned the reed valve real good ,, now it won't crank at all. have rebuilt many carbs before and this one seemed to be pretty good inside , gurss I'll look for vaccum leaks tomorrow ,, is there a point on the compression that it just won't open the reed valve to let gas in ? compressoin was 85 yesterday and down to a little under 80 today goes up to around 90/92 when I spray carb cleaner in the plug hole .
also who has the best prices on rings alone , it's my brothers cart and he isn't going to go for a full rebuild .

Not cranking? Or cranking but not starting?

80 lbs of compression can keep it from starting. Leaking crank seals can cause the fuel pump to not pump fuel. If your going to rebuild it you might as well do it right the first time. You can get rings and any other parts like the crank seals from CartPartsPlus or any E-Z-GO dealer. Check the bore before you order rings. It's possible the cart has already been rebuilt and could have a over sized piston...

Fuel pump is electric , been that way for a couple of years , when it stopped running last month nephew said that for a week it just got slower and slower and harder and harder to crank , I think it may be time to bite the bullett for a complete rebuild myself but brother isn't going to do it ,,,just patch it up for now !
had it cranking Thursday but barley above an idle try to speed it up it just died , seperated the muffler ,, same result , probably just rings , seals and gaskets .

Let me see if I can guess what has happened here; Your nephew tightened down the gov. spring until he could to 20 or more MPH. Trouble is if you are still using the oil pump, and I am guessing he is, it does not pump enough oil for the higher RPM you get. So you have to put in an extra half ounce of oil in the gas. When you pull the head, you will find alum. all over your cylinder walls. You will be able to clean that off with muriatic acid, full strength, and you will need a new jug and rings. Not a hard or expensive fix. You can do the whole job without pulling the motor.
That's my

0 for 3 - no oil pump / nephew is 4 th grader wouldn't know what a governor was if he seen it . we have been mixing the oil/gas ever sence we got it ,
this engine doesn't look like it has ever had a oil pump on it .

used a different compression gague on it today and after 4 tests it is reading 54 pounds on all 4 tests .

was wrong about brother's decision also , he said just button it back up and push it out of the way till spring .
