Club Car or EZGO need opinions

I'm going to post this on the Club Car and EZGO side for opinions on both sides.

I have a '95 EZGO that I use on my deer lease. It doesn't have near the torque that I need so, here's my problem. Do I spend $1200 or so on a motor and controller or do I put that money toward a newer, maybe '03-'04 48V Club Car. I am not very knowledgeable about carts but I would think that a 48 volt would have to be quite a bit more power than a 36 volts. There are tons of golf cart dealers around me, the Club Car dealers tell me that the 48 volt Club Car is stronger hands down while the EZGO dealers tell me just the opposite that a 36 volt EZGO is just as strong as a 48 volt Club Car. The cart that I have now is not lifted but whatever I decide to go with will be lifted with bigger tires.

Give me some opinions!

My 02 48v CC has plenty of torque with a 6 in. lift and 22 in. tires. Spending a bunch of money on an older cart really doesn't make a lot of sense. But most of us have done it. My neighbor just bought an 04 48 CC for 2300 from a local dealer, nice cart, great starting platform for his hunting buggy.

My experience with electrics is you should upgrade the controller if you lift it with taller tires. Especially if you load it down and run hilly terrain. I just burned up a stock EZGO controller on a cart that I lifted. So it got a 400amp controller, big big difference in torque and a tad bit more speed. 3 and 4 people on it occasionally and hilly terrain finally took its toll. I also have a 48V Club Car DS non regen that I'm lifting now. A big controller and motor is on the way, but I'm doing a little overkill on this one. It will be seeing some serious terrain.

You wouldn't need to spend $1200... Just a nice 400amp controller with 4ga wires would do the trick(imho). Wires and controller, maybe $450 tops.. With the 400amp controller you also have the option to bump the voltage to 48V if you choose, I think Gorno did that with his EZGO and uses a car charger for the other 12V. One more thing, you probably have a non DCS-PDS (series) which is the best EZGO setup for upgrades.

If you compare a stock 48 volt cart to a stock 36 volt cart you won't find much if any difference in speed or torque. Like Frank said if you want more torque you'll need more amps from the controller.

If your 95 EZGO is a series cart not a DCS you should have pretty good torque. What condition are your batteries in? The series carts handle tires up to 22-23" with no problem. If you have a lot of big hills and are pulling heavy loads you'll need to upgrade the controller and cables on a 36 or 48 volt cart if you want the torque.

Your 95 should be a Medalist. They are a little heavier due to the metal body.

My 36 has new heavy cables and new Trojan's too. It is a dog, hills that I can barely creep up by myself another members 48CC just flies up with 2 people. It's like night and day!

For 1200 bucks you could get an alltrax 500 and two more batteries (put them in the bagwell) for a 48v upgrade. You'll blow that CC away and still be money ahead!!

Buy the way. Your CC buddy might not be telling you about his upgrades.

Is your motor gray and made by GE? In the early 90's EZGO was using them. They call them the "tin can" motor. They don't have very good speed or torque...

36 and 48 stock usally have about the same amps so same power but i would go with CC because they won't rust and good steering and good strong stock motors
