Club Car Gas Golf Cart Backfiring and Won't Start

I just recieved this gas Club Car golf cart from my grandfather's estate and cant get it to start. It's backfiring through the carburetor and the spark plug is getting soaked with gas. It has a fe290 engine I think and it won't start.

I've already set the valves, and can't even get it to fire with starting fluid in the plug hole (the only fire im getting is out of the carb)

Maybe I'll pull the valves to see if they are gunked up. Also someone said that the pin on the flywheel may be sheared?

If the engine only has 30# of compression your probably looking at a rebuild. 140 to 160 pounds of compression is what you need. A little lower would be ok but 30 you've got some real problems. Just wondering have you worked on the starter/generator at all this might seem like it doesn't apply to your problem just thinking out loud. :twocents:

I agree with ftfixer. If the valves are set right and you only have 30 lbs of compression there's something wrong internally either rings or the valves have carbon on the stems and aren't seating. It possible the rings are washed down with gas. Try shooting some oil in the cylinder and crank it over a few times then do the compression test again.

I haven't had to mess with the start/generator yet. Could I maybe get away new valves and rings? I really want to see this thing run, but I dont have much money. I have no idea what others have done to her before me, so Im not looking for a money pit.

The service manual says 57psi for compression so if im at around 30 rings and valves should bring it up. However wouldn't a gunked up valve cause loss of compression also?

Are you sure the service manual says 57psi? It should be 140+. I've seen the valves carbon up on the Club Cars and hold the valves open a little and cause them to loose compression. Sometimes you can tell by looking at the valve springs and you might notice one isn't as tall as the other.

I could be wrong, but on page 2-4 service data(under compression) it says minimum
4kg/cm2, 57psi with electric start.

I'm not being a smart...... this is the first service manual on an engine that I have ever read and there is a good chance that im reading it wrong..

Not only will I not be offended, but if I'm reading it wrong please correct me, and tell me where I'm messing up reading this thing. I have to learn, because I cant afford to have someone fix the cart.

One valve is definately about 1/32th of an inch higher, maybe more. How hard is it to get to them ?

Its all bad, the head and piston are full of divots. I'm gonna try to clean the exaust valve and put her back together I cant afford piston, head, and rings. Also it looks like quite a job maybe good winter project.

I can post some pics after I pull the head again.
I took the valves out and hit them with some valve compound (not the hardest project with two people and a couple screwdrivers) but it was hard to find a drill with a small enough chuck. I put it all back together and still no luck, but now after jostling the carburetor around the engine is flooding also, gas just pooring out. Now my next step is to retest for compression (if still bad ,looking into rings)

Well rings it is probably will take a few weeks for money and parts. Can I change rings without taking motor out of cart?

Well my rings came in,and the motor is out.,but I cant get the last piece of clutch off, any tips ? The thing looks like its molded to the shaft, but that is not possible as one is cast alum and the other steel.

Do you have a Club Car clutch puller tool? I think you'll need it to get the clutch off. I've heard of guys using a 2x4 between the clutch and the motor case. I always use the puller.

I got the golf cart running but she still has clutch problems. I know how to work on the clutch because my scooter has the same kind.
