Club Car Acceleration problem

I have a 1988 36v DS Club Car. When I push the accelerator pedal I have to go about 1/4 of the travel before it moves. When it takes off it jerks real hard. This happens in forward and reverse. Any suggestion on what I can do to get smooth acceleration?

If your cart is still stock you will have a V GLIDE ( PIE SHAPED UNIT BELOW drivers seat and between batterys ) speed control unit connected to a row of resistors. Check V Glide by opening cover up and checking contacts and wiper arm for operation. If contacts look good then check resistors and cable connections for corrosion and or breakage.
Jack rear of cart up and block SOLID then BLOCK the front wheels to prevent moving, then remove seat and while pushing pedal down check for operation. DO NOT RUN MOTOR AT SPEED FOR MORE THAN A FEW SECONDS as it will throw armature if run unloaded.

I checked under the seat and can't find a pie shaped device. I found 3 coiled wire resistors that are connected to 5 solenoids. Could the V Glide be located some other place on my cart or am I just plain missing it?

I found a metal box 2 1/2" x 4 1/2" x 2 1/2" with red end caps. Could this be what my cart uses in leu of the pie shaped V GLIDE?

How should I check this box?
How do I check the solenoids?
How do I check the resistors?

The cart clickes when you start to depress the pedal, but doesn't start to move until you get to half pedal. I don't have slow speed, its either no speed or half throttle and above.

Thanks for any advise on how to proceed.

If you have 5 solenoids the first one on drivers side is to turn power on to the rest, then each one toward passenger side is next step up in speed. Take your seat off, Jack up the rear of cart and make sure its SOLID, and then BLOCK THE FRONT WHEELS so there can be NO MOVMENT WHILE TESTING.
Turn key on and move F&R switch to forward position and then slowly push down on pedal and listen for ( 5 ) clicking sounds as you get further down. IF YOU GET MOTOR ACTION ( DO NOT ALLOW MOTOR TO GET TO SPEED ) as you will throw armature windings DESTROYING MOTOR.
If you have power through solenoids and still no power to motor then check your resistors for bad connections or broken wires. Just because a solenoid clicks doesnt mean its making power transfer correctly?
If you get all 5 clicks then you need to check each solenoid with volt meter for 36 volts. If no clicks you may have a problem with your speed control micro switches or the board that moves them can be worn enough to not turn each micro on in order.
BE VERY CAREFULL WHILE DOING ANY TESTING. NO RINGS, SCREWDRIVERS, WRENCHES ETC IN BATTERY COMPARTMENT, I have had rings cut from my fingers and watches cut from my arms from being careless and its not fun
