charger timer

I have an 84 electric ezgo with the coils. The problem is the charger timer. I plug it in and it charges good, I watch the hand on the cart to see how it is charging, but the timer will not work. It is one of those old silver types with the timer knob on the fron that times it as well as turns it on. It turns it on but will not turn around and turn it off. I put another one on...a used one...and it did not work either. I am sure it is charging but cant time it. Also the caps are always a little wet around the tops after a charge. I don't think I overcharge it, but any ideas on how to fix the timeer? and whats going on??
Thanks guys and I enjoy this forum very much!
I am working it over and will include photos soon.

Welcome to the forum...

More than likely the timer is bad. You can always use a timer on the outlet to plug the charger into or replace the timer in the charger. The cheapest route would be a outlet timer. You can get them at harware and home improvement stores. The ezgo timer is also still available...

thanks ...I am just wandering how long to charge it...should I use a meter, or the new dash meter that I have been using? The dash meter shows it when it reaches a full charge. I probably answered my own question.
Also the little bit of water around the battery caps, would it be overcharging perhaps? what would you do?
Thanks so much...great info and great carts!

The dash meter isn't real accurate, but it is relative. Actual pack voltage 30 minutes or so after charging is the best way to determine if it needs a few hours more charge. A 36v cart needs to be at 38.20 or higher.

As for the water, it is corrosive and should be neutralized with baking soda and thouroughly rinsed away. Some leakage is common, none is better. Your batteries might have a bit too much water in them. A specific gravity test on each and every cell will tell you what's going on, if anything. Also, digital voltage readings for all batteries should be VERY close to each other. I would want them within .03 volts.
