Big Block Engine Swap EZGO Golf Cart

Currently i have a 1994 EZGO Medalist golf cart and have questions about doing a big block engine swap. Spent a lot of time rebuilding from ground up. It has lift kit, big rubber, all new wiring, seats, new paint, and all equipment to make street legal here in Ohio. Now....guess what... I would like a little more power/speed. Nothing too rad. Would be nice not bog down the little 295 when hauling a passenger or two. The 295 runs very well, Its had top end job and runs as well as can be expected for its size. Here's the question. I have a cart mechanic friend that I trust. He is very experienced and has done a great job guiding me thus far. He's not a big fan of swapping out the 295 for anything other that something from EZGO, like a 350. He said that the B&S Vanguard twin would be a waste of money because it doesn't turn enough revs to increase speed. He was also concerned that the running gear would be a risk with all the increased power as it was designed for 9 hp not 23. He admitted it would have more power, just not convinced I would be happy with any increase in mph. I would be happy if I could get the cart going 35 or so. Would also like to update braking system as well. Thanks in advance for anyone's thoughts on this.

I've got a vanny on a Yamaha, Got-EZGo? has a 23 vanny on an EzGo rear. We both run in excess of 8000 rpm with no trouble. The stock vanny will run 4k + with no mods. The amount of torque and hp difference is unbelievable... If ya just want a little more power, go to the 350. Nubs is doin' lots of mods with them.

Thanks for the info....Was really hoping to go with a kit like Alpha Cart offers on the Van 23. it just threw me when my EZGO guy was so concerned about the rears abilty to handle the extra push. Also, can anybody enlighten me on the stock 295 revs versus the stock Vanguard revs'. My mechanic friend seemed to be concerened about that fact. Appreciate any reply!

the ez go igniter starts to cut out at 4000, the Briggs governor backs off around 3800. you can bypass the Briggs governor and turn around 4300 before the valves start flowing, upgrade valves springs will get to 5000+. the ez go engines will also turn 5 to 8000 with mods.
lots of aftermarket parts for the Briggs and the ez go aftermarket is out there if ya know a guy i have ran 70hp snowmobile engines on ez go rear ends and never blew one up. worst case it will strip a brake drum and a brake upgrade should eliminate that.

a modified 350 would be about 1/2 the cost of a v-twin kit but as DS said, its all about just how much power your lookin' for.

Thanks for the info. I will look into both options a little more as time allows. I'm really just hoping to be able to run the cart at speeds of 35mph or so with passengers. if I can do that with a 350 with mods I'd be happy. Glad to hear the rear is strong. Just looking for a reliable driver that doesn't get in the way in town. thanks again. I will keep you posted.

to go 35 yu need the briggs with a rev kit and cams pushes about 30 HP we use that set up all the time.... carts run 35 to 40 mph but the kits are not cheap...

Thanks For the info...Can somebody give me a little help in locating a source for the rev kit and cam needed? How much do these kits reduce life expectency/reliability for the twin? Sorry I didn't respond quicker to the last post. I was out of state. Thanks in advance for any response.
