97 Gas Club Car Won’t Start Tried Everything

Did you unhook the muffler to see if it plugged, You said it was pushing air out of the carb instead of drawing fuel. Is the exhaust valve opening up?

I did disconnect the muffler as I thought that could be an issue and it didn’t make a difference. Yes the exhaust value is opening and closing I checked that when I removed the valve cover.

It’s like the timing is off but when I did what someone mentioned above the correct valves are opening and closing at the correct times

Get your vin number to make sure it is a 97. In 96 and older the engine runs backwards and the cam shaft is different than the 97

See attached info on the motor. I couldnt find any other markings on it. When I spin the pulley on the transmission clockwise like the clutch spins on the motor the cart tries to go forward. I was also thinking it was a different motor.

The VIN on the cart is a 97AG9732-592432
I’ll take a look to find out info on the VIN to confirm the year.

I started pulling the motor last night, it’s going to take a minute as it’s bolted to the transmission. Once it’s out I’ll find out what is causing it and post about it.

So I finally had time to rip the motor out and open it up. Sure enough the timing is fine…

Does anyone know what would cause the intake to spit out air instead of suck it in? It’s a 97, the starter/generator is hooked up correctly and spinning clockwise as it should.

Now to buy some gaskets and bearings since it’s already apart before putting it back together.

I just pulled the head, I don’t see anything out of the ordinary. I’ll order a new head gasket and lap/grind the valves and clean the head and put it all back together and hopefully this motor will run…

I think I figured out the issue. This is the intake valve spring. It should be a minimum of 32.8mm as you can see from the photo it’s under 32mm.(the exhaust spring was fine) I have new valves on order(a week shipping) Will update if that solves the issue.

Valve float could be the problem as to why air is being forced out the intake instead of sucking. Since the spring is weak the valve opens and the exhaust stroke goes out the intake instead of the exhaust side.

Let’s hope this $9 valve spring fixes the issue.

Yes, good advice! I only run premium in all my small engines, it’s worth the few bucks more in cost. I have the cleaned out carb hooked up to a new fuel line into a small gas tank instead of the cart tank it was new and the cart has been in my garage since I bought it.

Well I finally figured it out!

Someone put a 96’ or older motor in the 97’ cart even tho the engine cover shows 97’ model engine info. I switched the positive and negative on the starter so it spins counter clockwise and it fired up for a second. After a new head gasket, coil, spark plug, oil change, valve springs, valve parts, air filter, new fuel lines, new fuel pump, new carb. It’s runs really rough so time to play with the carb it dies when I give it gas.
I will have to put it in reverse to go forward and forward to go in reverse!

Thanks for all the advice and help!

Another update!

I checked the box of parts that came with the golf cart mostly snowmobile bearings and parts but I found the old cam that was in the cart. so I pulled the motor out again and opened the motor back up. Someone replaced it because the teeth were sheared off. They put the wrong cam in.

That’s why it was running backwards with air shooting out the intake and sucking in the exhaust. The motors out 180 degrees.

Can I drill out the new cam bolts that hold the gear on and clean up the old cam then bolt the new gear on the old cam? A replacement cam is $500 cdn. Has anyone ever done this before?
