My 97 Club Car moves just fine but there's a growling noise coming from the rear end. I could start tearing the thing apart however I'd appreciate some input as to what the exact problem might be and how difficult repairs might be both in cost and labor. ;)

It's hard to say without seeing/hearing the noise. It could be a axle bearing, bearing in the rear end, motor bearing, etc. Have you checked the rear end to see if it needs oil? May be to late now...

Shame on me but I wasn't aware that ther was oil in the rear end on these things. If it is low, could you tell me which is the correct oil? I would guess 90W gear oil.

My Club Car uses 30 weight motor oil for differential. Old mechanics trick is to jack cart up on good solid jack stands and block the front wheels. Then have someone run the throttle and you get underneath and using a ruler and or thin stick ( placed against the lower part of your ear ), then place the other end at center of differential and then at outer wheel bearings to find source of noise. Remember that you will get some sound from differential because only one wheel at a time will be turning and the spider gears make a sound as they should.
