96 won't charge, confused about obc, do I have it?

I have a 96 club car. I am troubleshooting the ever so popular not charging issue. In all the posts I have read you reference an obc. I assume this is the controller for the plug in charger. I have chased my wiring down. I have a gray wire that runs from the female charger socket on the cart back to what I suspect is the controller. I do not believe I have a tow/run switch however. How can I reset/check the controller ? I have found no wiring schematic that shows the actual connection on the charger and controller circuit that is the same as my 96.

thanks for the help

Hello,

Can you post the Serial #of the cart? It should be located below the passenger side glovebox.

Serial #s starting with "A" or "AA" are Electric
Serial #s starting with "AQ" are Electric WITH IQ OBC

The 1st two numbers designates the year.

By the way, the OBC is "On Board Computer", not the "Motor Controller".

It hasn't ran in two years but before that it ran fine. Now it won't run or charge. I suspect two separate issues. I am going to jump the relay in the charger. I tried the reset procedure. I removed the cables pos and neg, put selector in reverse and slowly pressed the go pedal. The buzzer never stopped sounding. I did this several times. I am unsure about jumping the solenoid. It seems that unless I am mistaken I would be shorting the solenoid to ground. Thanks for the help.

If the cart has been sitting without being charged for 2 years the battery voltage will be to low to turn the charger on. You'll need to charge the batteries individually until you get the voltage up enough to activate the carts charger.

I am charging the batteries individually. I tried bypassing the relay in the charger and it started but I believe the load was too large because it tripped the breaker. When I press the go pedal I can feel the contactor or solenoid closing. I do not have continuity across the load studs however. I assume the contacts are smoked. What is your opinion? I am considering replacing this with a different contactor that is rated for 48 volts with 200 amps continuous duty and 600 amps inrush. If the solenoid or contactor is clicking does that prove that everything else is functioning on the drive side of the electric circuit?
thanks again.

If the batteries are real low on voltage the cart is not going to move. If the solenoid is clicking the activation circuit should be fine. Is this a 36 or 48 volt cart? I wouldn't buy any parts until you get the batteries charged. If they sat two years without a charge the batteries may be shot.

This is a 48 volt cart. I just don't understand why I have no continuity across the solenoid when I can hear and feel it shifting. I still suspect it is faulty. I am however charging the batteries and won't make any decisions until they are up.

With low voltage the solenoid can click but not have enough voltage to close and make contact. Your solenoid could be bad but with low voltage or bad batteries the cart isn't going to run.
