93 Marathon just about there - Nubs, Hotrod help!

The saga continues. I said the heck with it & pulled the head off, and I put some gas in the intake to look for seepage. Sure enough I had a valve not quite seating good enough. I lapped the valve again, checked it again, and put it back together. I set the valves at .006 and took a test ride. It's running pretty good, no exhaust smoke, and it will finally go up an incline.

I don't have any missing, or popping back through the carb, but I do have a little gas still spraying at the air cleaner. I took a look at it running with the air cleaner out. I'm thinking the carb needs to be rebuilt. I took it off & cleaned it real good awhile back, but I'm thinking this is the final leg of the journey that I need to take. OR it needs to be adjusted, and that my friends is where you come in. What is the best way to adjust these carbs, and what it a good starting set point. I know nothing about these carbs. I would be greatful for any help you can throw my way. By the way all of you guys have been a great help to me with this project,

Thanks to all.

what is the compression now, ez go valve springs are very weak so seat leakage is very common if the valve guides are wore. the carb is not really adjustable, you can change out jets and set the float but thats it. if the throttle shaft is wore they sometimes pull air through, if the compression is less than 140lbs the carb will also like to spit gas.

I haven't checked compression since I rebuilt the motor. I guess I should, but since I did the rings and the cylinders were nice I just thought all was well there. I was mostly wondering about the carb, since this cart sat for a lont time. I did take the carb apart & cleaned it, but I did not rebuild it. I can't believe how touchy the valves are in these carts. My daughter is out taking her Bassett Hound for a ride now & when she gets done I'm going to check the valves again. I'll have to run a compression check also. I'll post what I find later. Thanks again

i know i'm harpin' on the compression deal but if it's right then you know the cylinders are sealed on the comp stroke and then you can look at other possible problems, to me a fella needs to eliminate things one by one. start with the foundation and work out, but thats just me

i'm not sayin' these engines won't run with low compression, they just won't have any power

Here is the 93 Marathon I'm still working on with my daughter & the killer Bassett Hound (99%) Pitbull (1%).
Ok it ran pretty good for a day or 2 then I got a little miss. I checked compression 145 on the drivers side & 130 on the passenger side, checked warm full throttle. I had a little gas & a couple of drops of oil in the air cleaner box. I reset the valves to .006 and took it for a ride. The miss seemed to be gone, and it ran better, but it still does not seem like it has the power it should.

So far I have new rings, valves, fuel pump, coil, plugs, everything in the motor looked good when I did the rings, I'm at a loss. First I'm not sure why the compression isn't higher I checked the cylinders & they were fine before I put the rings in. I checked the valves for leaks after seating them & they were good. I'm missing something and currenlty I'm looking straight at a 3 puond hammer

this can get ugly real soon. I'd appreciate any ideas.
Thanks guys

the low compression is your problem, are you sure you staggered the ring gaps when ya installed them.
did ya squirt oil in the cylinders and test it again?

I made sure I staggered the gaps per the book, but I didn't put oil in the cylinders & recheck. I'll do that tomorrow.
What should the compression be with new rings I'm guessing around 150.

they run 175 with a straight bore, if the comp goes up with the oil you will know the rings are not sealing and if theres little or no change the leakage is in the valves or head gasket.

Thanks Nubs, I'm going to try it again tomorrow with a squirt of oil & see how I make out.
I appreciate all the help.
