just for an introduction, my name is jim, I'm a commercial electrician when there is work and I crew cheif a harley drag bike that my freind rides and also have a shovelhead for the street and I take nothing to a shop. I'm stuburn that way.
One more note, if you and your lady are driving down a road on a Saturday and you see a sign at a crossroad that says "yard sale-tools", just keep going straight. I ended up with a sandblaster, ceramic tile saw(bad decision there), a bike lift and a 1981 EZ-GO golf cart. This was back in early fall '08
So, heres what I've got. As I said, its a 1981 with a Robin 2 stroke motor. My plans are to get this thing mechanically sound to give to my 94 year old grandmother, she's more like 70 years old by her energy level
I bought a new battery for it and after a little coaxing it fired up and ran ok with just a little smoke. I took it to a drag race and it worked ok for the weekend, maybe a little low on power but I'm not sure what I should expect. I brought it home and while running it around the house, I started hearing some noise from the gen/starter. I took it apart, cleaned the commutator and put new brushes in. Good to go there, its states and charges. A few days later I went to start it, but was getting no spark. I wiggled every wire I could find and it got spark. The next day the same thing, then I found the 12volt wire on the coil only had a few strands left. I fixed that and got spark. The next day, no spark again, so I stipped down the plug wire and stuck it back in the spear in the coil and got spark. The next day, no spark and I'm getting ill. Then it got cold. Well, now its march and I need to get this thing fixed. I assume that there are points or an electronic ignition pick-up behind the fan cover on the motor somewhere because that where a wire runs from that goes to a box on the firewall that has a shroud over it and then goes to a coil. What is this box, a condensor or an electronic ignition box. Are there any parts such as points and condesor that are available in an auto parts store. Does anyone have a wiring diagram for this. Does anyone have an idea. Right now, the cart has snow on it but its melting off and its supposed to be 58 degrees tomorrow. I appreciate any and all inputs and sorry for the long post. Jim
edit: I found the wiring diagram if it is an '81, that the last number on the engine plate
edit #2: the model number under the dash is A8301

well maybe this thing isn't an 81, the wire coming from the engine housing is actually two wires, red and blue. I'm going to go look things over a little better, its 50 degrees out there and feels pretty good

It fired up. The red and blue wires had been spliced and just twisted and taped and were corroded. Hopefully this was the problem all along. I still need to figure out the year of this thing so I can do some more research with the right info. I guess typing helps the brain---not

Welcome to the forum...

Look on the passenger side just under the storage compartment on the dash. There should be a tag with a serial # and a Manufacturers code. Post those and we can tell you what year the cart is...

model # is A8301 and serial # is 275033. I looked at the chart but I don't believe this thing is an 2001, so I must be missing something. Thanks for the input. I wish I had found this sight back in the fall. I just couldn't justify buying a parts catalog for 60 bucks so I've been winging it. It took me a while to find the right brushes for the gen/starter but finally found a set at the Yamahas dealer for 14 bucks, Thanks again, Jim
