80's Electric EZGO Golf Cart Troubleshooting

Can anyone walk me through some troubleshooting for testing the accelerator switch and the resistor coils on a mid 80's EZGO electric golf cart? I think i have the problem narrowed down to one or both of them. Can the resistor coils go bad? If so how do you tell?

I think the resistors have to be broke/burnt in two before there bad. The speed switch, just check that all the wiper arm is making contact with ALL the contacts on the board.

Thanks, thats kinda what i thought with the coils. The wiper arm seams to be making contact. in fact the solinoid clicks faster the more i press on the accelerator. i cleaned up the end of the wiper arm and all contacts but it appears that the wiper arm is not the original. The plastic coating on the wire is newer than the rest of the wiring. This one is threaded aprox 1'' round and 21/2'' long with 3 nuts on it. does that sound rite?

That sounds like the right one. What do you mean the solinoid clicks faster? It should only click once. is it clicking more than once? (chattering)?

Thanks for all the feed back. Ya i guess chattering describes it. like a weak battery in a car sound. I just rechecked the batteries they are testing fine. Ive got 3 12volt batteries in a series. They test at 13.3 individualy and 38 togeather. I tried running a jumper wire from the soliniod to the contacts that the wiper arm connect to...no differance. I think that would bypass the wiper. Im stumped

It sounds like you either have a bad cable connection or a bad solenoid. You can try jumping the two large posts on the solenoid and see if the cart runs. If all your cable connections are good and you have good voltage I'd say you have a bad solenoid.

Ive got a new solenoid on the cart so I will take the advice and check for a bad cable. The more troubleshooting I do with it that seems to be the last piece to the puzzle. Thanks again for all the help and I will post what i find.

Ya it says 36 volt on the package. I got it from napa they looked it up and matched it to the old one. I plow snow and we have been getting hammered lately so i havent messed with it. hoping its a bad wire

The solenoid has to be a 36 volt continuous duty golf cart solenoid. Chances are the solenoid you got isn't the right kind for a golf cart. Your best bet is to order one from one of the golf cart parts supplier like Buggies Unlimited or Everything Carts. Their links are on the sidebar of the forum.

Did you ever try jumpimg the two large posts on the solenoid with a 6 gauge or larger cable.

I have checked all the cables they look fine. I cleaned every connection front to back. I also tried jumping the posts on the solenoid still no go. The wiper arm is clean and making a good connection and the batteries are charged and testing good individually and in the series. When I press the pedal the solenoid just chatters. I've jumped the motor and it ran. Could there still be a short in the motor when hooked up properly it wont work? Can anyone tell me where i could find a wiring diagram for this golf cart?
