48 volt converter

I'm wondering which is better. A 48 to 12 converter or 48 to 12 reducer. I know there is a big price difference so I am wondering what everyone might recommend. I have known people to have burned up their reducers.

Right now there are just head and tail lights but I want to add more lights and even a power outlet.

I don't like just running off a single battery as this can damage the battery eventually.

I use a 24v to 12v converter. They can be had on ebay for less than $10.
