48 Volt Battery Charger Won't Shut Off

I have a 48 volt Club Car 2004 rebuilt 2007 with new 6 - 8 volt batteries and the battery charger won't shut off. The golf cart had been running and charging just fine, batteries take full charge, battery voltage (no load) and specific gravity indicate no battery problems. After using the cart to near full battery depletion or partial depletion charger goes to max current then drops to about 10A and never shuts off. Charger will stay at 10A indefitely (more than 24 hrs). If lcharger is left on it overcharges and boils the batteries.

Can anyone suggest how to isolate the problem to the battery charger or the golf cart? If its the charger is the relay the only possibility? If it's the cart is there anything other than the batteries that would cause the charger to stay on indefinitely at 10A? I have also checked all the wire connections and terminals with no problems noted.

If the batteries are showing full charge both voltage and SG then it could be the OBC. When you plug in the charger to the cart the amps on the charger should go to 15-20 amps then momentarily go to 0 before returning to 15-20 amps and eventually taper down to +-3 amps before switching off.The OBC should automatically switch off the charger after 16 hours if the batteries have not received their full charge to prevent battery damage. If the initial 15 to 0 and back to 15 cycle is not taking place then the OBC is not operating correctly. In any event it may be worth re-booting the OBC. The procedure is explained in the Club Car Resources Section on the forum. :hattip:

My neighbor has an 04 Club Car golf cart that acts they the way you describe . He runs it way low, till darn near dead before he plugs it in. Plug it in and it will not shut off, unplug and run it for awhile, replug it in and it will shut itself off after 6 hrs or so. It has brand new batteries this year and it acts the same way as it did on the old batteries. My first thought would be OBC. It seems to be fine if you keep the batt. charged up and not run it real low like he does. My thought would be to charge after every use and get some readings voltage off those batteries.

Your neighbour is going to shorten the life of his batteries by running them too low. The batteries should be recharged after any use and should not if possible be discharged below 40% of their capacity, when the open circuit voltage on a 48v cart would be 47.83v. Check the Trojan web site for good info. :twocents:

Yes i know and agree I never run either one of my 48 volt carts down that low. I just thought it odd that after a small run and then recharge that the charger would then shut off. :dazed:

Thank you all for the input. I had to return north for a while. Will have the OBC checked when I return and post the results.
Great golf cart forum. :hattip:
