36v cart not charging/working

have an older EZ go cart that was my mother in laws. It worked up until this past summer, when they let it sit for the past 6 months or so. i can't get the charger to come on. I cleaned all the batteries connections and have been charging each battery seperately. I have charged 3 of them and when I put a meter on the set of batteries the most i read is abotu 18-19 volts. The cart will not even make a noise when i turn it on and push the pedal. Any suggestions of what to try. I don't want to buy a new set of batteries until i can verify the cart is working. Thanks!!

Welcome to the forum...

You need more voltage before the cart is going to run. Make sure the batteries don't need water. If they're low add distilled water until the plates are covered. Charge the other batteries like you did the first 3. Once you get to 28+ volts the carts charger should work...

thanks for the reply. I will update when the batteries are charged. I have been reading on the 48V conversion and might end up going that route depending on the current batteries and if the cart runs

just tried it a few minutes ago. It has been chargign the past couple of days with a 6v charger, 1 battery at a time. The main charger still won't kick on and I measures 35 volts at the terminals. I put the positive lead of the voltmeter on the pos terminal where the charger lead was connected and put the neg lead of the voltemeter on the neg battery post where the other charger lead connected. did I measure the volts right? How do I determine if the charger is the problem?

Also, the cart will move now but in forward it feels like something is wrong with the cart, it is jerky and doesn't sound right. reverse was pretty smooth. any ideas. for info, the cart is a j1795 and has the tow run switch under the seat. Thanks!

If you have 35 volts at the charger receptacle that would be enough to turn the carts charger on. Sou you either aren't getting a good connection at the charger plug or there's a problem with the charger. The cart being jerky is more than likely because you only have 35 volts. If you hook your meter back on the receptacle you'll see a big voltage drop when you press the go pedal and that will cause the cart to jerk.

it is a powerwise industrial model 28115 GO4 .weird thing though, i turned the carger on its side to read the model # nd it started charging for A few minutes. Maybe something is loose inside.

More than likely a loose connection inside the charger if it worked when you moved it. Unplug it , pull the cover and take a look inside...

i have it laying on its side ad it is charging fine now. Once it charges i will take the cover off the charger and see if i can find anything out of place

just went and tired the cart and it seems to be workign pretty well. 2 questions though,

1. does the powerwise charger automatically shut off? It has been on for the past day and a half and was still charging when I disconnected it.

2. how do I tell if these batteries are still OK. They sat for a while low on water and are problably 4 years old?

thanks

1. Yes the charger should shut off automatically when the batteries are charged or after 16 hours. If it kept charging past 16 hours you either have a bad timer board or a bad battery...

2. Take individual voltage readings on the batteries one hour after a full charge and again after 1 hour of actual pedal time and post the results on both tests (you don't have to disconnect any battery cables)...

just checked the batteries after charging and they were all 6.3 volts with the exception of 1 battery. It was 4.3 volts. I have not been able to drive the cart yet, but when I do i will repost the reading after driving the cart
