36 volt loses run time quickly

Hello all.... I have a 1986 ez go 36 volt. Batteries are showing a decent charge but they die out within just a few minutes. Also the resistor coils are glowing and very hot withing a minute or so. I replaced the ceramic board and hardware and was told the coils are fine. Seems like power isnt getting past the resistor but i cant figure out the problem. The charger needle goes all the way up when i plug in but drops below 5 within about 10 minutes. Cart is in nice shape so i'd like to fix this power problem if i can. Thanx in advance for any help!!! Also whats the outlet looking thing directly below the forward/reverse switch??

Check each battery with a volt meter... Sounds like one bad one is sucking the life outta' the rest...

On second thought...

Do the coils glow when in motion or while sitting with the key off???

Only when moving. I just realized the batteries are from 2005. Guy told me thats way too old for the brand of battery (dont remember name off hand). I checked the wiring and everything looks correct. I think the problem is the batteries are wasted.

Welcome to the forum...

If you have a digital volt meter you can get a pretty good idea of the condtion of the batteries.

Thank you!! Yeah i'm gonna pick up a meter and hope theres one bad battery. The tester i have shows all 6 are good until i drive to the end of the driveway and back twice. Then they all show VERY weak. Not holding a charge at all. Know anything about used Trojan batteries?? A guy who works on carts is selling a set of 145s (i think) for $300. Guarantees they will last another 3-4 years. I dunno....

The resistors are suposed to get hot if driving slow. but not red hot. If they are getting red hot while driving full speed you may have a speed switch problem. Not saying the batteries aren't anygood, sounds like they are week as well. But, you may want to check that the wiper arm is hitting the last contact on the wiper board.

I don't know thats the actual name for it, thats just what I call it. Its the square board with the round contacts on it, and the arm that wipes back and forth on. opperated by the pedal..

ok. Yeah the third contact down IS a little loose. Maybe i should replace the board. Or get new contacts... Coud that prevent power from getting where its supposed to go? Maybe thats why the coils are glowing so hot - power getting held up?

Hi. That arm goes up and down freely. But like i said the third one down (secon one up) is a bit loose.

What ceramic board did you replace? The one with the coils mounted to it? If so are you sure you got it wired correctly? Why did you replace it. Did the cart run ok before you replaced it?

Yes - the board above the coils. I replaced it because it was crumbling and falling apart. I numbered and taped the wires as i took em off and made sure they went back on the same way with all new hardware. Also replaced pretty much all the 6 guage with 4. Any chance the batteries being dead (or almost dead) could possibly cause the coils to heat up that much? Or maybe the connectors of the wiper board need to be replaced?

yes - the board with the coils. Had to replace because it was crumbling and falling apart. I taped and labeled the wires when i took em off and made sure they went back on the same way. Also replacd almost all the 6 guage with 4. And coils went back on the same - small toward the front. Could dead (or almost dead) batteries cause the coils to glow like that? Possibly the connectors on the wiper board need replacing?

I dout the weak batteries would cause the coils to heat up that much. Did it run before you replaced that stuff?
Keep in mind, I think your batteries are probly very weak, like the other guys do, but at full throttle the coils should not be getting hot. it really seems to me you are not getting the final speed (which bypasses the coils) And if that is the case, that will be really hard on your batteries, weak or not.
Have you checked a wiring diagram to make sure every thing is hooked up proper?
