1998 Ezgo 4 stoke problem

My 98 Ezgo gets this black fouling soot, (not wet) on the spark plugs immediately after I changed them. I took the carb off and cleaned, I changed the oil, I replaced the air filter, and I adjusted the valves last summer to .004. You have to pull the choke out half way to start it, and it just doesn't have that get up and go every time you hit the gas, it kind of sputters at first. I also checked the compression on both cyclinders cold, and it is 150 lbs. I don't know where to go next?

Normally I would think valve adjustment but if you have 150 lbs of compression they're probably ok. I'd still check the valve lash to be sure. Was the engine cold when you did the compression test? Does the oil smell like gas? How's the float level? How old is the gas? Did you blow out all the passages in the carb after you cleaned it?

The engine was cold when testing the compression, I did blow out the carb after cleaning, I don't think I smelled gas in the oil, The gas is fairy new with some sea foam. When I took off the carb to clean it, I put the hose in a small bucket and pressed the gas to make sure it was pumping to the carb. I just don't get a brand new pair of plugs getting all that powdery black soot on them, five minutes after putting them in???

just wondering what type of plugs you are using and also is this a 295 robins?

i know that you said you changed the air filter but it sounds to me like you still may have an air flow problem and are not getting a good fuel air mixture.

What about the hose that goes from the air box to the bottom of the engine, what if that has a leak in it? You have to choke it almost every time it sits and then take off.

i think the hose that you refer to is the crank case vent line you need to make sure that it is connected good and also is not cracked or broken.i have also seen wasp or dirt dobbers build nest in the opening on the air box .i am from the south where we have a lot of dirt dobbers.

have you tryed poping off the lil black cap at rear of the carb and turning the pilot screw to the left and give it more air flow
ive been playing with mine when the engine is running temp and i got it running good after drilling the jet to bigger size
and adding a big air filter that flows.
is it possible someone before you put a hair bigger jet in it and it does need more air flow?

you may also try a 1 degree hotter plug as ive tryed colder and hotter to check whats best running lately, john
